Join our Stride For Success fundraising team and you can model health and fitness while supporting hundreds of incredible scholars at Success Preparatory Academy.
What is Stride For Success?
This year, Success Prep teachers, leaders, board members and community supporters will run as a part of Stride For Success, our second annual running-based fundraising campaign. Supporters are signing up to run healthy races – 10k's, ½ marathons, marathons and more – across the country, and our key event will be the Crescent City Classic 10k on April 23, 2011.
How can you get involved?

K-2 students went on field trips to Audubon Park & Zoo and visited Tulane and Loyola Universities.

Sports for a Cause donated great new P.E. equipment to help our students stay active, stay healthy, and have fun.
TEACHER PROFILE: Avery Himes
Hometown: I was born in Wiesbaden, Germany but grew up in the SMALL suburban town of Barstow, California.
What drew you to New Orleans? I came to the city of New Orleans to teach. During my senior year at Morehouse College, I was conducting research regarding the health disparities in African American male community and found that the largest impact of African American men's health was their education. I decided to go back to the community and teach. I wanted to be somewhere where I was needed, somewhere where I could truly make a change, and I became a Teaching Fellow through teachNOLA in 2008, and I've been teaching here in New Orleans ever since.
What appealed to you about teaching at SPA? Success Preparatory Academy is a unique school because it embodies the value of community--encouraging, servicing, and strengthening the community. I love and believe in the mission and values of this school which agrees with my personal philosophy about education. Success Prep believes in servicing the whole child, not just the student and that's why I'm here as Kindergarten teacher.
What do you like most about your job? The best thing about my job? My students! My students make me laugh every single day. Yes, I have those days of stress and frustration, but they don't compare to happiness they bring into my life.
What is your favorite thing about Success students? My favorite thing about my Kindergarteners at Success Preparatory Academy is that they know they are going to college. We sing and talk about college every morning and it's awesome when you ask, "Where are you going in the future?" or "Are you going to college?" or "What college do you want to go to?" and they proudly respond, "Yes!" It's amazing.
